My company has a contract with Hertz...thus, lots of Ford products. I had a 3 liter Jaguar X-type in LA a couple of weeks ago. Apart from the tiny back seat, I found the car to be really fun to drive...fast, excellent torque (great Euro feeling engine characteristics), great handling (Jags seem to be comfortable, but still grip the road really well) comfortable front seats, big trunk, absolutely fantastic stereo, and a character level that definitely made you feel like you were driving something special. If the car were a bit bigger inside, I would look at it more seriously.

I'm not an SUV guy, but I've had Ford Escapes twice and actually like them a lot. Small on the outside, but BIG on the inside, and the 3 liter has plenty of power for an SUV.

I hate it when I get Camry's, non-Duratec V6 Taurus/Sables, and god forbid, the fleet only Escorts (that they still make!).

US Rental car companies allow those of us who love driving to experience some of the least exciting, most appliance like vehicles ever.

That being said, I LOVE renting in Europe....great cars, manual transmissions...like Peugeot 406s, Ford Mondeos, Rover 75s, Renault Lagunas, even the Vauxhall/Opel Vectra, which the Euros bitched about as being awful (until the most recent one) was 10 times more exciting that anything American. I even got a Peugeot 206 CC (check it out online)once...the most fun I've EVER had in a 1.6 liter car...

Ahh...the cars we can't get here..

Cheers,
Paul H.
