Practicality Sucks!

My '92 9K (n/a) was recently trashed for me by an off-duty policeman, and now I'm faced with the prospect of replacing our family's primary mover with something that will better accommodate my wife, three children, and four dogs. Never felt good about the child sitting in the middle of the back seat with only a lap belt, and thought that SAAB had introduced a third lap/shoulder belt for the middle with the introduction of the CS body style - alas, I was smoking dope. Can't afford a 9-5, family's too big for an NG 900, so whadda 'ya do? You buy a Volvo! Yes, my humble confession - I am now going to own one of each Swedish make (have a '90 900 SPG sitting in hibernation). Does a Volvo 740 wagon have three lap/shoulder belts in the back - yes; does the 740 have a nice, big cargo area - yes. Did I find a nice one - yes (Canadian spec, five-speed, 2.3 turbo). Does it have the sophistication and character of a 9000 - no. Does it have the ability to endear itself through consistently quirky engineering - no. You never realize what a beauty the SAAB 2.3 engine is, as it sits there, transversly, with its dual overhead cams staring you in the face, or the entire sense of understatement in its design. The Volvo, by comparison, is staid, solid engineering, that makes great sense on drawing boards. Forgive the long rant, but I miss my 9000, and feel like some of my "belonging" to the SAAB crowd has been taken away.
