But some really are a lot better than others. The Volvo would go in the snow, just not very well.
It also depends on how much snow you're talking about. In the C900, my wife led a snowplow up a steep hill with 6" of snow on it (without snow tires). By comparison the Volvo would spin getting up up our moderately inclined driveway in just a few inches of snow, even with the Blizzaks all around. And if it was icy it was worse.
Tires make a big difference, but the same type Blizzaks I ran on my GTI and the C900 made little difference on the 940, even with weight in the back. More weight would have helped, but why should you need to carry 100lbs or so of sand to make up for shortcomings in the car?
The 940 was by no means undriveable or unsafe, but it lacked the feeling of security you get in a car that is better in limited traction conditions. You never felt you could count on the car to get you through, a feeling I've never had in the GTI or the Saab. Of course, front drive makes a big difference, especially with 4 snows.
