What the dealers apply is a type of car wax that is made up of an acrylic or polymer sealant. There is actually no "wax" in it. Sealants hold up better to weather, car washes, environmental pollution, etc than a natural-based wax which degrades quickly. But even the best polymer sealants will not last 6 months with 3-4 months being the norm.

Dealer groups sometimes outsource car care products and sell them as a package. The sealant product applied to your car is typically no better than what you could buy for $20 at an auto parts store. I know for a fact that some "sealant packages" offered by dealers is a product made by Meguiars which you can buy for $10 at NAPA and apply yourself in your driveway. All other claims are total BS.

As someone already said, there are some boutique-type polymer sealants on the market now if you want to maintain the paint yourself. Zaino is a very good product which I use, so is Klasse, Blackfire, Platinum, and the aforementioned Meguiar's product which specifically is #20 Polymer Sealant. Any of these will work exactly the same as any dealer applied goo and will last as long. This is an easy and rewarding Sunday project. Or you could always do like the poster with the red 900 and polish frequently with your favorite store-bought wax and your car will look great. It all depends on how frequently you want to wax and how much $$ you want to spend. But for God's sake, take a pass on the dealer's crud.
