And it is, but it does depend on what you need to do. You can get it from MacMall for $349, and you can get MS Office for $369.DK what AppleWorks costs.
I have both MS Office and AppleWorks. The AW suite is hard to beat, since you get drawing, spreadsheet, word processing, etc for short money. I used to teach an "Intro to Mac" class using it. The word processor lacks a few things, but is fine for most of what you're likely to do. It will *usually* open Word files fine and when told to, it *usually* saves in a Word format that can be opened on other machines, but you may run into some incompatibility now and again. If you will be sharing documents with a bunch of Windoze users who have different versions of Word, you have to be careful to know what file format to save to from AppleWorks. See if it will save an RTF file, which all versions of Word can open.
I do tech/marketing writing for a living and that's my experience over 13 years on Macs. I mostly use MS Office 98 and have zero compatibility problems with my clients. They are all Fortune 500 companies and all use Word, so I have to have total compatibility. I have to change the file type for a couple, but it's no biggie.
My eldest kid (14) uses both Word and AW, depending on what she'll have to do with it.
Hope this helps...
