There's gotta be more to it than that. I used to believe that too, but there's just so many other things that the designer can mess with.
Our Saabs are oversquare (90x78mm for non-Viggen), but we brag about having good torque at lower revs, kinda like a truck engine. The turbo gives that to us; I don't know what takes away the high redline...
My Integra GS-R is undersquare (81x87mm), so it should be truckish. But its a screamer with an 8000rpm redline. It uses aggressive cams so it doesn't run out of breath, & variable valve timing so it still works at low revs.
