Ahem. Science fair time. I have designed audio amplifiers a-many. My prejudice is that the battery beats the capacitor, but let's do the math.
We have a 600 watt transient-probably the bass thud from one of those obnoxious cars with goofy-looking rice stuff. 600W is 50 amperes from a 12V line (reduced from the more normal 13V alternator output at the amplifier side of a power line). A 1-Farad capacitor lets its voltage droop 50V/second with 50 amperes of load. This droop probably stops when the battery+line drop is perhaps about 2 volts, when the battery takes over from the capacitor. So the battery only serves power for 2/50 seconds, actually somewhat less than that due to the hand-off between capacitor and battery. The battery is useful only for sound transients that last less than about 0.03 or 0.04 seconds.
Sounds to me that it would be more useful to beef up the power and ground lines. Remember, in Saabs there is a star ground in the engine compartment. The body is not intended to be a ground-you're supposed to send heavy ground current to the star point. Taking power from the battery-to-starter connect block is optimal.
