Looks like Europcar has a lovely E20/day surcharge for being under 25. Thrifty is the only company without such a surcharge. I can get a Renault Megane for around E250 for the week. Big enough for two and light luggage?
Our original idea was to use the trains to get around, but I've read a lot of places that particularly in the Pyrenees it's hard to see much without having a car. Is that true? I really want to have the opportunity to get out into the countryside and away from the city. Practical to do with trains/buses/bikes? I know the TGV is a lot faster than driving, as well, and it would be nice not to have to worry about driving. No chance to stop at places along the way, though.
I estimated fuel around E1/litre, guessed at some tolls, and I think over the course of the week, the car would cost around E100 more than two sets of train tickets between the major destinations (Paris, Arles, Lourdes). Train maybe has some time advantage, but any side trips could eat up that E100 cushion pretty rapidly. Easier to do spur of the moment stuff with the car.
Ah, decisions, decisions.
