and EuropCar is top-notch but make sure any rate quoted includes insurance. RailEurope is a great service - especially the rail and drive packages. Check them out on RailEurope's website and book from within the U.S. to get the best rates.
That being said, I'd prefer to rent a car for a week's worth of day tripping. France is not THAT big, and I've always felt you need to figure your doorstep to doorstep time when trying to figure out time vs. convenience vs. $$$. While in Paris, I take the Metro and the RER to get out to the countryside; if I'm going past, oh say Versaille, for more than a daytrip, I'll rent a car. There is NOTHING like the freedom of not having to meet a train's schedule; European trains do not wait for you, they run on time. If you want to "go where the wind blows you," rent a car. This is where the RailEurope rail/drive system works so well.
Finally, don't think like an American! In France a Megane is really a large car. Go for a "compact" size... it will be large enough for two + luggage and more than likely will be a diesel. Almost every diesel I've ever driven in Europe was great and b/c diesel is the European norm, it's found everywhere. The last trip over we (wife, 2 year old in a carseat, and I) had a Peugeot 306 and were more than happy on a weeks tour of the Loire, Normandy, and Brittany.
Do get Rick STeves' "Europe Through the Back Door." That book will provide you with more useful valuable info than anyother tour guide book I've read. Enjoy!
