I think there are two good reasons that SAAB is producing the 9-2 that have nothing to do with the hatchback issue.
1st is to offer a smaller, cheaper entry-level product that still has the turbo fun factor. If it's as peppy as the WRX with SAAB safety and refinement it will sell if the price is right.
2nd is AWD. This is a cheap, quick way to get an AWD product out quickly. Again, making the car stand apart from the WRX is important, or having AWD will be worth squat if general opinion is that it's the same car, just more expensive from SAAB.
What I hope is that this is a stepping stone to offering AWD as an option across the entire line of vehicles, but may not be. Perhaps since the 9-5 will get a redesign soon AWD will be part of that. Doesn't sound like it's going to happen soon for the 9-3.
