Upper Mid-level Japanese managers (my co-workers) say they like the overall solid feel and thoughtfulness in the practicality of the design of my 02' 9-5. (The Japanese are first and foremost about efficiency in cars and Saab scores big points for this). (Secondly, the Japanese, though one doesn't necssarily think of this from them, do have a really keen appreciation for aesthetics in cars, it is just that they do not presume that they should necessarily be driving anything other than a 'typical' car so as not to draw too much attention to themselves! Tada... The nice enough Honda Accord is born.) I usually volunteer to drive to lunch once a week when I eat with our local President & EVP. They love the car, and asked me to pick up our Japanese Group President visiting from Japan last year. Since he personally owns a number of companies he said to me in Japanese, as soon as he got in,
"Oh. Anta. Dore Gurai?" Meaning, in rough brogue, "Hey, You, How Much Was This Thing?" To which I told him in Japanese, "Well. It was really about 40k but with our GM discount it was only 30k". He said, "Yosh! Gambare Jon!!" Meaning, "Great, Keep it Up Jon!". Then he told me it was too f*in' cold and to turn the air down. I told him we could divide up the air between sides but by this point he just waived what I said away with his hand. Next time I saw him was at our company's party at the Ritz Carlton where he joked with some people and me that cars are cheaper in the US than in Japan, which I like to think he was at least in part referring to my 9-5!
