Depends on age and mileage. Up here in Canada, a 2010 with about 80-100k miles (120-150k km) runs maybe around $8-10k CND (very quick look), which is probably not too far out of line for finding a decent $5k USD car. Many many older ones are well in the sub-$5k range with reasonable miles and condition, and if you find an AWD one in Cali, rust will not be an issue, and they should be able to go a long time... And again, the Pontiac version is the same car, just much more unloved by the marketplace... So basically if later resale doesn't matter, those are a steal... I know someone who is on a low budget, works a job requiring travel in miserable weather, and loves the Vibe as a beater get-anywhere in winter vehicle (I guess it's her snowmobile like my 1989 c900!)...
