I think a lot of cars are moving to this type of system where the lever moves and then comes back to the middle position after the gear engages. I have heard a Bimmer owner describe the same thing. I had a new A4 as a loaner a couple weeks ago and had no problem with the system (I have a 2011 A4 with a conventional auto).
