It also meant that the 9-3ss attracted a little bit different kind of buyer (someone looking for a price competitive option to a 3 series or a4) than the og9-3 hatchback. I feel that had a pretty big impact on SAAB's demise. Many c900/og9-3 owners here went on to imprezas or whatnot. Different body style than a sedan.
But SAAB was not exactly profitable with c900's or 9000s even though they cost a lot to buy. They were fairly expensive to produce also. There was a shift though in the type of buyer when you think back to the cost of a loaded c900 in 1989 vs the cost of a 9-3ss inflation adjusted in 2009.
