Thanks Justin! Intrigued by your reply, I researched this a bit more. The link below has a nice synopsis (albeit nearly 4 years old) of VAG evolution vs. VCDS. The current model appears to be the VAS 6154, around $2200 (OEM), with clones available elsewhere for much less.
Interestingly, it appears that VAG has moved the hosting of the diagnostic software (VAG ODIS-S (Service) and ODIS-E (Engineering)) from the stand-alone devices to the factory to thwart counterfeiting. Predictably, this has spawned efforts to circumvent this, presumably via older application versions and/or cracked keys.
If I venture forth into Audi DIY, I will likely go with the VCDS product.
