It is a bit of an experiment but I think it will work well for me. In the first instance I like electric vehicles for the environmental impact advantage, which I think is significant.
But even putting that aside, I love the car. It has lots of storage room (I’ve always driven small wagons, most recently ‘01 9-5 and ‘11 A4), drives great, has excellent Nav system, interior, climate system, sound system, backup camera, etc. You can control lots of stuff with your phone. Extremely comfortable seats and driving position. You say “for what you get” but I’m not sure what else I would want. I don’t need faster than 4.8 to 60. As to expensive, it’s comparable to lots of SUVs and my other cars inflation adjusted..
Tesla has had some reliability issues, but it also is #1 in owner satisfaction surveys. The Power rating is 30 day, which I don’t think is that significant. I have noticed one cosmetic flaw, a bit of interior trim has a little gap, doesn’t concern me.
I won’t hesitate to take it for long trips. There is not that much to go wrong, and roadside assistance is provided. The car requires almost no regular maintenance. If I have a problem, well, it’s not like I never had a problem in the 9-5 (2 flatbed rides). Time will tell.
I have a charger in the garage and so will almost always start fully charged. Range is 315 miles.
