Why does the Saab 9-3 Aero have better skid pad and slalom perfomance than a 3 series? And a better ride to boot!

Maybe on the race track there's something to be said for being able to influence both ends of the car, but around the cones a 9-3SS has better turn in and higher limits and IMO a better feel, lighter, more nimble, a real world definition of handling.

The all aluminum suspension and brake calipers, for low unsprung weight, also allow a better ride, expecially with the sport chassis and 17" wheels than the 3. And torque steer is virtually non existent in a 9-3SS chassis, allowing a lighter steering feel than the Germans.

I dunno' why folks assume that a 9-3SS isn't competitive in "the class" and it seems to be an assumption or bias vs. actual back to back testing.

BTW a 9-3SS is also roomier, safer (Double Best Pick), more powerful and less expensive than an equivalent 3.

I'm not knocking the 3, it's just I feel the mystique is overblown, especially with regards to the 3's forte, handling.

The 2006 3 may upset that applecart a little, when it will become the newest chassis in "the class", but for the moment that distinction belongs to the 9-3SS, and you can really feel it.
