Lexus not necessarily 'great' products...

They are generally pretty consistently reliable. That's not necessarily my definition of 'great'. Some of them are very good as cars, others are so-so.
Toyota has built Lexus' reputation on painless products that are well-supported, at least as long as the dealers are being paid to do so.
They're vulnerable, though, because few of their products have anything but the company 'painless' image to fall back on. The LS has the marketplace image of a Buick, or at least what Buick should be. Neither the IS nor the previous GS - both nice cars - were able to establish much of a marketplace niche relative to BMW and Benz. The ES330 has dived as better and more attractive competitors - notably the Acura TL - have appeared in the bottom-end entry-luxury space. The LX470 is still pretty much the best thing out there in its class, its pagoda-shaped offshoot GX is mechanically similar but ugly as hell (and I don't see why they feel a need for both?) The RX is okay but with the Acura MDX and the Cadillac SRX on the road it's no better than third-best in its segment (and the X5 is certainly better if you can do without third-row seats.)
Once out of warranty, one finds that the Lexus dealer community is no less greedy than any other.
