VAG is the VW-Audi Group of companies, but they have some strange corporate structure such that they can sell stock independently on the German stock market. As you described, an Audi is basically an upscale VW - my Audi A4 shares a lot of internal parts with a VW Passat, the Haynes repair manual that I have covers both.
Porsche is currently a separate company, don't know what their history is, and it's pretty obvious that an old Porsche, i.e. a 356, has a lot in common with a VW. They jointly developed the Porsche Cayenne and VW Toureg with VW, it has certainly paid off for Porsche who are now selling a lot of high-end, highly profitable SUVs.
Many Porsche dealers also sell/sold Audis, they need some diversification for times when sales of $100K two-seat sportscars is slow. When we bought our A4, the dealer was a Porsche-Audi combination, and I felt like a second-class citizen even though I had just bought the most expensive car in my life. Perhaps the recollection you have of seeing "Porsche-Audi" is from the license plate frames with the dealers name on it. They have since divided into two separate dealers, still with the same ownership.
