VW came over first, then Porsche. Audi didn't show up in the U.S. until the late '60s, with the Audi 90 and 100 LS in about '69 or '70, IIRC.
Porsche and Audi often teamed up as dealers, some with VW, which was a very prestigious trio for several years. The relationship changed, but Porsche still used VW's parts system for their U.S. inventory management and some of the supply chain into the '80s. When I worked for VWoA in the late '70s and early '80s people were from all 3 companies and moved about a fair bit. And we always had all 3 marques in the motor pool.
That all changed, too, at some point. But VAG, as others noted, is Volkswagen Audi Group. A lot of sharing in most areas. Audis are basically upmarket VWs, but each make has a lot of autonomy.
I suspect Porsche needs the downmarket cars to get some revenue from further down the food chain--and to get more clout and access to engineering technology and future designs. Porsche is still a family-owned business, as I recall.
