Finch is correct, big autoparts chain stores will typically read/reset a CEL for free hoping to sell you parts that you need to fix the problem. Note however that the last time I tried this on our Audi at my local Autozone they read the code (O2 sensors) but wouldn't reset the light until I fixed the problem - I convinced them otherwise (and eventually replaced the sensors). In the meantime, I bought a "VAG Tool" online that allows your laptop to do work similar to a GM Tech-II, but the basic version cost less than $100. The two issues, alternator and CEL, may or may not have something to do with each other.
