The Toyota trucks are hands down, the most reliable trucks built. Just pick the one you like best and never make a major repair. Having had a T100 (235k)and now a Tundra in the family, I would recommend a used Tundra TRD 4wd (Bilsteins, Lexus 4.7 V8) Bulletproof.
My good friend had a supercharged Nissan Frontier crew cab and felt that it was not worth what he paid regarding quality. A year later he traded it against a Chevy Trailblazer.
I'm sure there are Subaru Outback lovers out there but lets face it; Outbacks and Forresters are the Futons of the auto world. A bad couch and a worse bed. If you are looking to go "poor roading" you'll need some ample clearance to be able to confidently drive the vehicle without impact from road debris and bottoming out..
