OT: S40 cooling fan control

This isn't Saab related other than by country of origin, but
I'm trying to check out a problem a friend has with a 2000 Volvo S40,
with a cooling fan that appears to be coming on spuriously.
When I checked the battery, it read all of 0.0V; completely and utterly drained, and I suspect the cooling fan kicked in while the car was parked in the garage.
Swapped the battery and started it, and the cooling fan came on shortly afterwards, and remained on pretty much full time while idling. Occasionally it would turn off, but only for a couple seconds, before kicking on again- not normal in my book for any car.
Temperature gauge read normally, and no indications that the cooling fan was justified; ambient temp was 41 degrees, and the radiator was pretty much cold.
Looked down the radiator to see if I could spot a cooling fan switch a la Saab, but didn't see any; I figure it may be under ECM control.
I have zero information on it, so haven't rounded up any likely suspects.
If anyone happens to have the scoop on these, lemme know- there doesn't seem to be any equivalents to Saabnet for the Volvo; the forums I've seen look more geared to the users rather than the tinkerers, so I figured I'd have a better chance finding out the deal here- :-)
