General sludge question

Was in south Florida this weekend and drove my father's new-to-him 2003 BMW 525i that he'll keep there for his snow bird days (winters away from the north). He very recently bought it from a BMW dealer. No certification. 43K miles. After about 300 miles of fast, hot motoring, the "service engine soon" light came on and there was a noticeable loss in power and the car idled and ran roughly. I was able to limp it back to the dealership.
I looked at the oil via the dipstick -- the level was fine. But I did notice what appeared to be some black caked-on crud (for lack of a better description) on the plastic part of the dipstick that shows the level of oil. I slso looked in through the oil filler opening and noticed the same black substance internally...a very thick, dark film.
My concern is that this may be evidence of sludge...and perhaps a car that wasn't maintained properly. I asked my dad if he knew of the car's service history (no). I'm not sure there was a great deal of thought put into this purchase other than the fact that he has been driving BMWs for years.
I also noticed that the dealer changed the oil before delivery and marked that they used semi-synthetic (on the windshield sticker). I know BMW requires full syn. All of this is making me highly suspect of this car overall.
Any basic thoughts as he deals with this dealership?
