Somewhere I found some more details from Bob Lutz on the battery situation. They want a Li-ion battery that will last 10 years and 150,000 miles, with over 4000 recharge cycles, and that will perform well from arctic to desert temperatures. A123 batteries seems like their best bet (now used in the new Dewalt 36V cordless tools) and GM is working with them on this. NiMH is not desirable due to environmental disposal/recycling concerns, and current Li-ion batteries cannot be recharged enough.
The Tesla roadster actually has 3 (i think) battery packs that it rotates between electronically to limit charge/discharge cycles. This is a workaround for the current Li-ion limits and allows for the overall battery pack to last long enough for Tesla's goals. Of course, when you start with a lightweight Lotus chassis you can waste lots of weight on extra batteries :)
Unless GM drops the ball, they seem intent on making this drivetrain widely available across their model range, so they clearly need a durable system that will be an easy sale and not be a warranty problem.
