My co-worker and his wife each drive Yaris sedans. The Yaris lacks ABS and side airbags in its basic config and better-equipped ones are hard to find since most buyers want the cheapest one possible. They like them, but they're big into low maintenance/high mileage these days and that was their big buying criteria. The Yaris mounts the speedometer in the middle of the dash.
The two subcompacts with the best safety/crash ratings are the Versa (best) and the Fit (2nd best) - I think this was recently reported by the IIHS. Don't get little cars without side airbags.
The Mazda3 is a compact car, the other 3 are subcompacts. The Mazda2 will arrive in a year or two as a Fit/Yaris/Versa competitor. If I were to buy one based solely on the paper specs it'd be a Versa (biggest engine, safety) or an orange Fit (v. clever interior, Honda engine, safe).
