I think of this often. It all depends on what floats your boat.

There are several older large convertibles from the '70s here in my town. There's a big Olds or Buick--bright red that holds six people; a couple of huge Caddys, a Chevy Impala, a big Pontiac, a couple others. A lot of those are affordable and often found in decent shape. They are real boats, but look like fun.

Then there are the Mustangs and Camaros which often tend to need less restoring (someone else may have already done some of it) and can command serious prices.

The mid-'70s and most '80s Mercedes 350 and 450 SL models are often reasonably priced and are durable cars. The earlier ones from the '60s --the 230 and 280 SLs-- are nice but may tend to be pricey.

Then you get into sporty stuff like MGs, Healeys, Jags, Datsuns, Fiats, Alfas, etc, which are a lot of fun to own and drive, but can be a bit fragile. And look out for rust! But if the frame on any of these is OK, there are companies that make just about every part for at least the British cars, so you really can do a great restore on one.

Or go more recent, like one of the BMW 'verts. They have been out long enough that you can get older ones at decent prices.

And there are always C900 Saabs! You can get these for $2K - $3K and do some restoring and have a very nice car. There are a dozen locally here that are summer-only cars.
