Especially if you're driving that much. My boss has a 2006 or 2007 Prius. I drove it for 4 hours a couple weeks ago on the highway and stuff. I was skeptical about driving it but found that it was sort of neat to have the gas engine cycle on and off seamlessly and be able to accelerate with no sound from a stop and get 47.2 mpg on the highway. That's about as impressed as I got. The interior may as well be made of Legos. All plastic. The steering wheel is small, skinny, and numb feeling, offering little to no resistance. The seating position was uncomfortable after about an hour and a half with the driver seat only adjusting fore and aft and reclining, and the steering wheel not telescoping. It felt far away. In my 9-5 my right knee leans against the console. After about 3 hours my knee started to hurt because of the weird angle I had it at to reach the pedals. Other than being uncomfortable I hated how damn slow the thing was. Going from 40 to 60 maybe it felt like it had some oomph with the electric motor and gas engine combined. But then when I was on the highway doing 75ish and I needed to accelerate, there was virtually nothing there. The gas engine revved to hell and we went nowhere. Literally, I think my lawnmower has more torque. It was a somewhat comfortable (ride-wise) highway cruiser as long as you were going in a straight line. But merging into traffic was not good, to the point that I was afraid we were going to be hit from behind multiple times. Saab brags about acceleration at speed rather than 0-60 as a safety feature, and I now know why.
As for the Civic, I have no personal experience, but my boss said she test drove one and while the Prius cycles between gas and electric seamlessly, the Honda gave a noticeable jolt/clunk when the engine was cycling. It was enough to scare her away to the Prius. She asked about it, and yes, they all do it.
Then, like you said, when you get out of the Prius/Civic range you're not talking about a worthy fuel efficiency improvement over your 9-5.
