The Z3 is much better, probably owing to a ten year newer design. But so is a Miata...
The Alfa Spider was never a great car (neither were most reasonably modern Alfas). But, they're iconic, Italian, and certainly fun to drive. Good or bad, sitting behind the wheel of one you're sitting in automotive history, and there's a certain pleasure in that alone.
The '85 is pretty much the pinnacle I'd agree - the last generation cars were incredibly modern looking for what they were, but all that extra stuff really killed what performance they had left to offer. A ~10% bump in weight is pretty substantial...
For whatever reason I've seen more for sale lately than any time before... there was even a rare Nikki Lauda edition up for grabs recently...
