Sorry, no help on the Jetta, but we did a long term drive in the Subaru (>3 weeks, >3000 miles) last year. The idea was to compare vs the 9-5 wagon, as I thought Subaru would be our second choice...
It's a very nice car in some ways, the AWD + low center of mass engine design are great! The safety is good and reliability should be better than anything European (although the bodies are more prone to rust). Unfortunately (while better than many) it has the faults of every other Japanese car I've driven: poor ergonomics (seats, controls, sightlines etc), not much low end torque, and lousy gear ratios in the auto (you need a stick). MPG isn't great either. Getting the turbo (with stick) should improve the drive, but the cost is then the same as the European options (Saab/Volvo/Audi) and you're still stuck with the mediocre ergonomics. Some (tallish = 6') friends of mine recently opted for the new Forester vs Outback because it was more comfortable. They were replacing an old Outback - apparently the new ones are more crammed. I've driven both, and I preferred the new one seating-wise (and driving-wise), but neither are in the same league as any Saab I've driven...
I'd also be interested to hear how people like the new Jetta wagons. I've never really considered VW before, but maybe I should?
I don't like much of what GM's done with Saab over the years, but they just haven't managed to muck them up enough that I've found a competing product I like more... yet!
good luck!
James...
