Agree with Mike Lynch on the 911. Have wanted one of those since I was 17 or 18. If I could only buy one more car for fun, it would probably be a 911. But it can be hard to find really good older ones, before they got all rounded off and modernized.
If you can spend some money and are willing to create something that's really all your, how about a Cobra, as in the 2 seater of the mid-'60s? A real one isn't remotely affordable but a couple companies make a great kit that's actually better than the original. Figure on about $30K with 300 hp and a 2200 lb curb weight. Kinda pricey, but not impossible.
A Ford GT. Unaffordable to buy but there are ways to rent and go play. Ditto for a bunch of exotics.
I had a 1966 Volvo 122 Amazon. One of the cars I shouldn't have sold, so I understand your hankering for one. They are indeed a fun ride.
If you can find an early VW GTI, or even better, a '76-'80 Scirocco grab it. Had a '78 'rocco and an '86 GTI. Tons of fun for not a lot of money. Shouldn't have sold the Scirocco, either.
How about a mid-60s MG, Alfa or Triumph? Huge fun to drive. Sometimes fun to work on. Sometimes not. Every conceivable part is readily available. I briefly had a '66 MG-B that sure made me smile. A '63 Midget, too. You can get concours pristine ones, basket cases and some that just need varying amounts of TLC. A friend specializes in pre-WW2 MGs and has a lot of fun with his fleet.
How about a Miata? Right now, I want one to set up for street, track and autocross. More affordable for me than a 911, and I can do more with it.
Or if you are so inclined, how about a used formula car for track and autocross? Trust me, there is NOTHING like driving an open wheel race car on a track.
