... and it sure seems true: "Ferrari is a LIE!" I was ready to buy one last year. I had an '84 308GTS QV all picked out and had cash in hand. The proud owner drove it down to me and I was ready to do it... until I drove it. I had Saabs, Audis, a gaggle of VWs previously... I was expecting this Ferrari to be a lot like a Scirocco, but, much faster, better sounding, more connected to the road... just MORE!! It was positively the most horrible thing I've ever driven. The steering was twitchy and SUPER heavy, the transmission was TERRIBLE - balky, terrible syncros (although I did like the gated shifter), it wasn't very fast and it sounded like a combination of a Honda with a fart can with the tweet of an old VW Beetle. And this car was supposedly a very good, well sorted example. Plus, to boot, it was VERY fragile. It felt like it was made of tissue paper and tin foil.
I was gutted.
My father-in-law has graced me with the privilege of storing and maintaining is '78 911SC Targa for a while. Now THIS is a wonderful car. My only rocks that I can throw at it is that the transmission is pretty worn out - syncros are very worn and 5th gear whines - and that the front end is too light. BUT! Other than that, it's exactly what I expected the Ferrari to be and much, much more. It drives beautifully, sounds fantastic, and is built like a brick sh*t house. WONDERFUL car.
My recommendation is to try to get your hands on a recent Porsche. Many P-car faithful may scoff at this, but, buy a Boxster. I've driven many of them and they are positively outstanding. They're VERY durable, relatively low-maintenance, VERY reliable, they handly substantially better than even a 911, and they're CHEAP! You can pick up an early one for less than $10k. The Boxster is lightyears ahead of this old 911, for sure, and is absolutely the funnest, most balanced car I've ever driven. They are very user-friendly as daily drivers, too, if that's how you choose to use it.
FWIW... just my $0.02.
