when Hyundai first sold cars in the U.S. their customer satisfaction program was contracted out to the consulting company I worked for at the time. I ran a big part of it from 1986 to 1989. It was actually the most sophisticated automotive customer sat program in the U.S. at the time.
Seeing all the gory details, I know the Excel was a pretty awful car. Very mediocre build quality, lots of issues. But Hyundai in the US was largely staffed by folks from Toyota, Honda and Nissan, and the guys back in Korea paid attention to what we told them. They were all in it for the long term.
Fast forward to 2008. I totally ignored Hyundais until I rented a Sonata and a Volvo S40 in Florida, one week apart. Much to my surprise, I actually liked the Sonata just as much and in someways more than the Volvo. Sure, it only had the anemic 4-cylinder engine (yawn), but it was a decent car. I was wondering what more power and some suspension work would do to it.
The Genesis sedan seems nice and the Genesis coupe, available with a 300+ hp V6, seems pretty sweet, and is certainly priced right. The real longer term value is TBD, but offering a bit more car for a bit less money seems like a good plan. If I was buying new I'd definitely go look at a Hyundai.
It's good to remember that Saabs really weren't a whole lot to write home about in the '50s and even in the '60s. Especially the 2-strokers. Neither were BMWs.
