S1000RR - 193 freakin' horsepower Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Tue, 19 Jan 2010 18:14:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
BMW's new superbike the S1000RR arrived yesterday at our dealership San Diego BMW Motorcycles. With 193hp and only 400ish pounds, BMW jumps into the lead with it's first entry into the class. No more stodgy boxer engine bikes with shaft drive and anti-dive front ends, but a world beating dead conventional chain drive normal front end (upside down forks) superbike that is being universally praised by every cycle magazine, not a single gripe or niggle. As one magazine said "All the Japanese bikes will be this good in two years"......
Superbike refers to a racing series for production based "literbikes" or 1,000cc sportbikes. There are two major classes of international motorcycle racing, Moto GP which is the Formula 1 non-production 800cc bikes, and World Superbike which was won last year by the Yamaha YZF R1 with it's cross plane crankshaft. Other contenders in Superbike are the Honda CBR1000RR, Ducati 1098R (twins get an extra 200cc), Aprilla RSV4, Suzuki GSX-R1000 and Kawasaki ZX-10R. The race bikes in SBK, World Superbike, are very much production motorcycles.
The Japanese brands are priced at roughly $12-13K, the Italian Ducati and Aprilla are $22k, the BMW "only" $16k and with advanced features like four level traction control, Rain-Sport-Race-Slick, that actually measures lean angles to adjust output, a BMW first, and Gear Shift Assist, clutchless upshifting, that the other brands don't have at any price. That and a 3 year BMW warranty vs one or two years for everyone else.
Previous BMW sportbikes were heavy and slow, 635 lbs and 135hp. Even the new K1300S is only 175hp but it's still 100 lbs heavier than the superbikes at 521 lbs. The sportbike market is huge and BMW hasn't been a player until now. BMW figures if they can capture just 2% or 1 in 50 sportbike customers the S1000RR will be our best selling model, equaling or surpassing our best selling model the R1200GS and not taking anything away from our current customer base and in fact exposing our new younger S1000RR customers to the rest of our line. Life is good!
