I have a Yamaha FJR 1300 that I commute with daily, about 25 miles each of mainly back roads in western Mass. I get about 45 miles to the gallon on the commute but have averaged +/- 50mpg on highway runs around 80mph fully loaded. It uses regular gas, no premium needed. It also has a decent size tank giving me a 200 mile range. It is made to munch highway miles.
I too have knee issues but find the position comfortable. I've added highway pegs which allow me to stretch out my legs once out of the city and Helibar risers which brought the bars up, back and out. My longest day this summer was 592 miles.
My problem with the cruisers is the pressure it puts on my spine when sitting bolt upright using forward controls. The slight lean forward on my bike is more comfortable to me.
The bike is very low maintenance, shaft drive and the hard bags come off in seconds for lane sharing. You can add a trunk for storage with the bags off. Put the bags back on and you have one of the best sport tourers on the weekends.
Mike Lynch is sure to chime in with his Beemer suggestions.
