For her junior yr (just finished) my daughter was taking a car, and had managed to total her 1999 9-5 SE(4) while home for semester break. I got the 9-5 Arc for her.
She's 500 miles away, so no wrenching by me. Yes, I considered something "more reliable", but I also wanted her in something safe.
I had a HHR for a week as a rental, visibility-out was terrible, seats uncomfortable, and no way can you can you consider it a safe car, when you're used to SAAB's. Anti-lock brakes were an option on the HHR until 2009. Safety obviously not a priority for these cars.
Jeeps?
Unless you live on the top of a mountain, or you have to ford streams to get home, the only reason to buy your daughter a Jeep is because you can't stand watching her hold her breath while she waits for you to get her a "cute Jeep".

2005 9-5 Arc
2005 9-5 Aero
p.s.
the Arc had over 120k miles, but was from a private owner who just 6 months earlier had bought it from his employer. It had been his company car, and the company had taken it to a SAAB dealer for complete going over, fixing anything broken. All highway miles, great shape, other than few door dings and minor scuffs/scratches. He was planning on keeping the car, but couldn't say no to a new Camaro SS.
after one year, so far, so good
