I'm rather smitten by the Land Rover Evoque--turbo four, pretty fast, pretty economical. The only way I'd buy one would be to lease it for the length of the warranty though--and they are pretty pricey. The Honda CRV isn't bad (it tends to win comparison tests) but I think I'd much prefer the Acura version. They went to a V6 six this year but previous years had a turbo four. Mercedes just came out with a four cylinder diesel in their small cross-over--I believe it starts at around $38K. Of course if I lived where you do the only vehicle I'd be considering would be a Jeep Wrangler. It's a station wagon/ute, and yet you can turn it into a convertible/dune buggy in 20 minutes (faster with soft top). It gets about the same mileage as your BMW but the resale value borders on miraculous--you can buy a new one, drive it three years and sell it for a few grand less than you paid for it (check used prices if you don't believe me). You can buy a lot of gas for what you'd save on depreciation.
