CX3, Juke, or maybe even a Countryman? All small crossovers with pretty good fuel economy - especially the CX3. The Juke is weird looking but a pretty darned nice drive. The Countryman is (IMHO) annoying with a manual transmission, but fuel economy doesn't suffer much with the automatic. You've also got the Ford CMAX coming out shortly - it gets high marks overseas and the Focus underpinnings are pretty nice.
FWIW, my sister bought a 2013 Soul with a manual 6-speed and is very happy with it. Doesn't quite get the advertised mileage, but isn't far off the mark. She's averaging about 30mpg in mixed driving. It's plenty comfortable and peppy even with four people in it. It's not an inspiring drive, but by the same token a very fine appliance. I tried to steer her towards the Juke - it's a better drive, but less practical.
