I agree with the others regarding lots of issues on old audi's.
My general thought is if you are looking at older cars, get one that doesn't have all the electronics that an A4 or even a loaded Saab would have.
Windows, sunroof, complicated air systems, power seats.... all ready to die.
Some of the relay's alone cost hundreds of dollars.
From my own experience, years ago, I bought an old '87 900 turbo with 170k on it. Had a lot of new parts, no rust, but all the little things added up to me spending a lot of money keeping the car going.
I finally had to give up after realizing between the cost of buying it and fixing it, averaged over the time I had it, I was spending over $300/month
So, I went and got a loan for a 3 year old 9-3 and payed less than $300/month and had a warranty.
I loved that 900, and if I knew more about fixing cars at that time, I probably could have held on to it for less money
If what you were looking at had 100k miles, I think that is a different story.
