That's funny, maybe they improved the Avenger a lot because a couple friends of mine rented one for a long trip - they hated that thing with a passion (one of them is a Porsche fan, and a very good driver, the other a Subie guy, so it may be partly anti-domestic bias, but handling was the main complaint)... that would have been about 2010? thereabouts?
Like AeroEd, I read Johnson's wish list, and thought 9-5. Easily takes 3 kids and it is dirt cheap used. Shouldn't be hard to find a good one down south. It's the salt that kills the cars up here.
The thing is, if you want an appliance, a 9-5 is probably not the way to go, not because they are unreliable, or parts are hard to get (and iirc you DIY repairs, and owned a 9-5 previously), but because if something breaks down on the road, it's going to be harder to fix. For that reason, NoSnaab's advice of an Accord or Camry is probably the safest bet. You can weld the hood shut on a Honda and forget about it and it will be ok. $15k won't buy you nearly as much car in a Honda as in a Saab, and it probably won't be as safe for 3 kids, but it will be good enough and resale will be good. I think that should be a significant consideration where you seem to change cars quite frequently.
The only thing (again, I'm repeating NoSnaab's posts of the past), you say after owning saabs, you are looking for a minimum hp... are you sure you're not looking for more torque? Maybe what you really miss is the turbo? In that case, I would really suggest looking at another 9-5.
