If it is comfort you seek, try to find a basic E60 5-series with sport package:
a) ride quality with non-runflat tires is sublime
b) has a spare tire
c) MUCH better seats -- especially if you find one with "Comfort Seat" option
d) not much more expensive and not much more thirsty. Unless you get the V-8 ;)
I have both 3-series and 5-series at this time and while I treasure my 3er for its incredible driving dynamics and overall feel, I think the 5er is significantly more comfortable without giving up too much in terms of driving dynamics.
If you do end up with a 328i, do yourself a favor and get some premium non-runflat tires. Runflats are beyond terrible after 5-10k miles.
And just to be clear, while AWD system in 3-series is far better than AWD system in manual transmission Subarus, I personally feel that AWD detracts from BMWs in a significant way, especially with manual transmission. Shifting action is noticeably bulkier, steering is not as good, etc. RWD is the way to go if get a BMW.
