I think we're still a ways off on the per-mile road taxes. I don't want to, but I must agree that they have to be levied, so whatever. Right now, though, the government is still offering incentives on electric car purchases, so it seems unlikely they'd incentivize people with one hand and then reduce the benefit with the other. I suspect there are at least a few solid more years of artificially low operating costs. I think the more likely short-term solution will be heavier taxes on gasoline for an increasingly fuel-efficient national fleet - cars using half as much gas to go the same distance over the next ten years has gotta hurt. That seems the bigger fish to fry, but we'll see.
There is a fair amount of stuff lost when going electric, but for daily duty it really seems like the right choice. I love driving, I love the sound and smell of ICEs, and to a large degree I really enjoy working on them, but I want to enjoy, experience, and wrench for leisure, not because I have to. I'd be totally happy with driving electric five days a week and firing up some old motor for weekend drives into the mountains or to the beach or whatever. That'd work just fine for me. No joke, if it wasn't for several logistical problems, I'd probably go get another 500e tomorrow.
