Low maintenance, at least Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Mon, 17 Mar 2014 15:47:02 In Reply to: It can't really be maintenance free..., Cary, Mon, 17 Mar 2014 15:02:05 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
No oil changes, no radiator, no transmission, no exhaust system, no engine oil, no ignition system, no emission systems -- most of the regular maintenance items are just not there.
Of course there's always suspension, brakes, bearings, and the like. Most of that falls into the category of "repairs" rather then (scheduled) maintenance. On the other hand, properly designed electric motors can last a really long time, there is none of the mechanical complexity found in conventional automobile engines and transmissions.
Batteries are still the biggest problem. (I've also read that repairing regenerative braking systems can be very expensive. Probably the same for all of the electronic control systems.)
Fuel cells might wind up being a better long-term solution for electric vehicles than chemical batteries.
