My daughter is in the same situation and you really only have about two choices--minivan or big full sized sport ute. There's a big difference between the best minivans and the rest. My son has a Honda (the best in my book) and I rented a Toyota for a long weekend--both are amazingly useful when you have kids. Not so sure about the rest. When it comes to big sport utes there's really only one, the GM Suburban/Tahoe/Yukon. I've always considered them the poster boy for retched excess but have had to change my tune in recent years. I drive one for work and my daughter has one--the space they have is just incredible. I can't tell you how many people I know who have these things and have 200,000 plus on them with no problems. They use common truck components which are dirt cheap, are simple/straight forward to work on and just don't seem to have any issues. The one I drive has 20,000 miles. Last week I drove my daughters indifferently maintained 2000 with 120k across the state and I couldn't tell any difference. If you're going late model, the Honda Minivan is the way to go, but they're very, very expensive used. If you want to pay cash, the GM is great bang for the buck. They've been building them forever with few changes and you can buy one for whatever amount you have to spend. I don't want to like them but if you want something with lots of room that you can buy cheap and keep going on a shoestring (other than the gas mileage) there's nothing better.
