Japanese are cars are the lightest which yield the best fuel economy but when a new car is redesigned they usually don't pass ihss crash tests. Not sure if EPA receives the lighter car for testing so they have high mpg numbers then the heavier, redesigned bumper is the one is sold to the public.

Not only do Japanese cars, specifically her 2012 Subaru Forester, not pass crash but they frequently crack their thin windshields, blow fuses due to smaller diameter/under engineered gage wiring. This is backed when putting up the windows, as you add another window while closing one they all tend to slow. The more windows powered up the slower they go. While replacing fuses I noticed the corners being cut in the thin metal brackets for the seats and the loss of carpeting once your eyes are below driving height. Lots of wind and tire noises on the highway that you have to turn up the radio just to hear it they really cut back on heavy sound deadening.
