There is some truth to the point that the original factory windshield from our Saab's are unusually thick. I had to replace the windshield on my 2001 9-5 a few months ago. Despite paying for the most expensive option available, the replacement windshield was visible thinner than what I remembered of the factory original. That's one of the reasons why I started thinking about replacing the wagon.
There are many cheap corner-cutting jobs from just about any manufacturer nowadays. OTOH, the higher end models do often have very good quality material, regardless the country of origin of the manufacturer. The windshield on my MDX is triple-pane sound-deadening. It is quieter inside than in a Lexus or even a Rolls-Royce! Yes, I was actually in a Ghost sedan this summer. If and when it comes to replacing windshield again in the future, that could indeed be a problem, just like the 9-5
