Justin - you nailed it again - thank you. I'll probably crack open the wallet to pay for a proper replacement when the 10 year interval rolls around, but I'll do it more for peace of mind rather than actuarial certainty my money is not being wasted.
I always suspected the service intervals were a bit fudged. For instance, on my 06 S60, I was supposed to change the plugs out at 60K. But in a fit of cheapness, I kept them in. The car now has 103k on the original plugs, and it is running so smoothly, I'd rather not mess with it (I do realize I may be prematurely killing my coils as a result of my habitual frugality - but I'll cross that bridge later).
In any event, I figure I'll keep the car for 15 years tops - and was curious whether I could continue milking the thing cheaply and then just dump it on whatever dealer is lucky enough to sell me a new car. I mean, when the "filled for life" tranny fails, as if I'm going to spend real money on such an old car.
Thanks again for your insight - puts me and my money at ease.
