second the size/shape bit... We rented a Forester years back, and with 4 people in it, it carried no more than a c900 sedan. How the heck? Well sure it probably has more cargo volume, but with the back seats up, the trunk footprint is rather small, so you have to stack vertically. One of the large items we would normally load lengthwise into the c900 had to go width-wise in the forester. Other stuff had to stack on top. You can only stack so high without a grill, unless you want junk falling on your passengers heads... and even so, it is nice to see out the rearview and raising the center of mass throws off the driving dynamics anyway.
So basically, more height really doesn't help except to make the volume numbers look good. Instead, I would put more faith in the "trunk area" footprint and shape. Measure it and any protrusions into that space going up to the top of the backrests of the rear seat, or cover or whatever.
9-5's main downfall in terms of hauling is not the volume, but rather the mass. It is very easy to load it so much that the suspension can't keep up and you wear out your tires. Too bad! Otherwise, it is perfect as a hauler.
