I wouldn't call those calculators 'reliable' but there is good science there. It is only calculating the HP during the rev range that the car is operating while doing the 1/4 mile. You can calculate with some reasonable accuracy how much hp it takes to move a certain amount of weight in a certain distance.
When you are drag racing, depends in on your gear ratios, you are operating within a 1000-1500 rpm (think about the differences between your revs from gear to gear at the same speed...the aeros tall gearing will put it at the higher end of this range)
As an example let assume for two cars with identical weight, gearing and traction.
Car A is torque monster similair to the Aero it makes 300tq at 2000rpm and holds it steady for awhile with a taper towards redline. Power at 5000 rpms is 200hp and power at 6000 rpm is 250.
Car B has a smaller engine with a relatively large turbo, it makes 250tq at 3000rpm, but had almost zero drop off through out the rev range and hit 5000 rpm with 225hp and 6000 with 275hp.
Both cars have close ration gear boxes and are able to launch at high rpm and keep it within 5-6k from shift to shift.
The end result is that car B wins on the drag strip everytime. Though car A has much more area under the curve with more torque at lower rpm, it will not help it on the strip...now if you were to take these two cars on the highway, have them cruise at about 50mph in 5th gear and stomp it, Car A would put bus lengths on before car B even got really moving.
