I see what you're saying, and I'm sure that with a few different pieces of tubing you could create your own kit - that's something I did with my c900, albeit with aluminum tubing. The way the Taliaferro kit is designed however would limit you from any real modification, if only because of the shape of the heatshield (which is really the heart of the kit). It fits one way very well, and forces the filter into the position it's in. Initially I was worried about a cold air source and pulling hot air past the heat shield, but the factory 'cold air' tube that feeds the stock airbox is used pretty creatively. The outlet of this tube is forced into the area protected by the heat shield, and thus into the filter. The gaps around the heat shield are also very minimal, at least considering the space available to work with under the hood.

In summary, yes you could probably slap a cone filter on the mass air sensor, but without the heatshield you'd be drawing some pretty toasty air. Whether or not the air temp REALLY makes a difference is still up for debate, though IMO the colder the air, the denser the charge, the more potential for power. Hope that helped!
